Alfredo Maestro 2016 Almate
Feiring Line Wine Society: September 2018 Selection
From Alice: Alfredo Maestro is indeed a maestro. His wines, all of them, always delight. He’s a pioneer in Peñafiel in the Ribera del Duero where natural is virtually unheard of, shifting between no and low SO2 adds. This one is a gift to the economical as it delivers powerfully in flavor and interest—as well as in price. Fermented 80% whole-cluster, in steel, then raised in neutral French oak for two to four months with a single racking. Even that tiny amount of time spent in oak allows the wine to get that extra layer of importance. It’s not a long-ager, but around January of 2019 it should be perfection. At this price, you can stock up and put my timetable to the test.
