Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet (Herve Souhaut) Blanc 2016
White wines from the Rhone Valley get very little love. Especially whites from the northern part of the region. The grapes grown here (Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne) don’t exactly rank with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc on the world’s greatest grape hits scale. And if not given the proper attention, they can make big, flabby wines that no one wants to drink. But that’s not the case with this wine. It offers up lush, exotic notes of honeysuckle, pear, honey, and nuts. That lushness is balanced by an almond skin bitterness and a mineral earthiness that makes this a tasty, seductive treat.
